Reform UK appoints Dan Thomas as new leader in Wales

Reform UK has appointed Dan Thomas as its new leader in Wales, marking a significant moment for the party ahead of this year’s Senedd elections.

The announcement comes alongside the defection of Brecon and Radnorshire Senedd member Evans to Reform UK, a move that doubles the party’s representation in the Welsh Parliament and signals growing confidence among its supporters.

Thomas, who grew up in Blackwood and previously served as leader of Barnet Council until 2022, takes over the Welsh leadership following the jailing of the party’s former figurehead for bribery. Reform UK said the appointment represents a fresh start and a chance to build a credible alternative to Labour and the Conservatives in Wales.

Speaking after his appointment, Thomas said he was honoured to take on the role and was determined to give Welsh voters a stronger voice. He said Wales deserved leadership that focused on everyday concerns such as jobs, public services and restoring trust in politics.

Evans, who crossed the floor after reviewing Reform UK’s policies, said he believed the party offered practical solutions that were missing from the current political debate in Cardiff Bay. His decision has been welcomed by Reform supporters as evidence that momentum is building in the run up to May.

Critics have been quick to respond. Labour MP Chris Bryant has previously described the party as little more than a rebranding of the Conservatives, arguing that Reform UK would not deliver the change it promises. Others have raised concerns about the party’s stance on devolution and public spending.

Despite the criticism, Reform UK is enjoying rising poll numbers across the UK, and party figures believe Wales could become a key battleground. Campaigners say they are seeing increasing interest on the doorstep and online, particularly from voters who feel disillusioned with the main parties.

With the Senedd election only months away, Thomas now faces the challenge of turning that interest into votes and establishing Reform UK as a lasting force in Welsh politics.
