Review: Fame the Musical, Cardiff’s New Theatre

A brand new production of Fame – the Musical comes to Cardiff’s New Theatre this week from 24 – 29 September. Now imagine this…

‘Imagine you’re bright, talented kid who dreams of being a triple-threat, singing, dancing and action across the stage’. It’s opening night of your year end performance; it’s a cold, dark, dry autumnal evening in Cardiff and you are greeted with the yellow glow of the New Theatre’s Edwardian lights sizzling in the sky.

Now imagine being in an arts school dedicated to bringing out the best of your ability. Remember your school friends Iris, Tyrone, Carmen and the slightly controversial Joe? They are all there waiting for you in what will be your night to shine and show off all of your hard work.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the show as you’re taken on a journey of creativity and life lessons. In this musical performance of Fame, you will certainly feel part of class 84.

Based on the 1980 pop culture film, Fame – The Musical is a smash-hit show that has enthralled audiences for decades. It follows the lives of students at New York’s High School For The Performing Arts as they navigate their way through the highs and lows, the romances and the heartbreaks and the ultimate elation of life. This bittersweet but uplifting triumph of a show explores the issues that confront many young people today: prejudice, identity, pride, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse and perseverance.

The chances are that even if you’re never seen the film, you’ve probably heard of it (Fame). That’s no problem though, if you have or haven’t, as life’s journey is something that we all take and can relate to – this is why people love it!

As someone that has seen musicals in both the New Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) and further afield, there is something special about this particular performance being where it is. The cast, of course is made up of professional and highly skilled performers, but the rawness, and the rough and readiness of Cardiff’s New Theatre is what makes this the perfect place for this musical.

The storyline is about raw talent, dedication, hard work and pulling yourself up from the street with your bootstraps. Yes, the New Theatre may need a lick of paint here and there, but that’s the charm of this place. If you’ve ever attended a sports club or community group when you were younger, you may very well have started in a similar place.

For Famefanatics, you’ll be pleased to know the show features the Oscar-winning title song , as well as a cast of outstanding dancers, singers, musicians and rappers. Watch as they transform from star struck pupils to superstars.

You’ll be up on your feet, clapping and dancing away during the show’s fantastic finale.

A special thanks to the New Theatre team for the tickets and inviting us along to last night’s performance.

Fame – The Musical plays at Cardiff’s New Theatre from 24 – 29 September and tickets are available from the Box Office on (029) 2087 8889 and newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
