Recently, Cyfarthfa Park and Aberfan Community Centre hosted the annual Shwmae Su’mae event.

As part of the celebrations, Cyfarthfa Park, Troedyrhiw and Abercanaid Primary schools performed a variety of musical items. There was also a solo performance from a Rhydywaun pupil. Children from Ysgol Gynradd Coed y Dderwen also took part on Saturday offering Welsh parachuting games for members of the public.

Welsh Language community items included a powerful and enjoyable performance by Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, Ynysowen Male Voice Choir in the Aberfan Community Centre and a stunning instrumental performance by professional harpist Catrin Meek, a former pupil of Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudful. A pupil from PenyDre was also there on Saturday supporting Mistar Urdd.  Seren a Sbarc and Sali Mali also entertained visitors with their special appearances across Saturday and Sunday.

The Deputy Leader and Welsh Language Champion Councillor Geraint Thomas commented “the two days were a wonderful celebration of the Welsh Language, and it was great to hear the Welsh language being spoken during the events – a true example of our #Shwmaeronment”

Learn Welsh Glamorgan, Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin, Cylch Meithrin Pentrebach, Rhieni Dros Addysg Gymraeg, RHAG, the Early Years Department of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and Merthyr College supported the events as well as local and national Welsh language businesses.

The event was also visited my Merthyr Council’s County Mayor Malcolm Colbran, MS Dawn Bowden, MP Gerald Jones, and the High Sheriff of Mid-Glamorgan Jeff Edwards.

The Chief Education Officer Sue Walker explained “the two events were and opportunity to showcase the use of the Welsh Language across the County Borough and also support the ambitions of our new Welsh Language strategy and WESP, many thanks to our partners for supporting the events and to Wellbeing Merthyr for hosting them.”
