Welsh opera legend Sir Bryn Terfel and comedic star Rob Brydon have formed a duet to support Wales’ vineyards ahead of Welsh Wine Week.
Sir Bryn Terfel has recorded duets with some of the world’s most celebrated performers, but when it came to singing the praises of Wales’ wine producers to promote the launch of Welsh Wine Week (27 July-2 August), only Uncle Bryn – aka Rob Brydon – would do.
This July, the first ever Welsh Wine Week will see a calendar of virtual events hosted by vineyard owners and friends from the hospitality, food and drink industry, take place via social media and video platforms.
The week’s free events are designed to give audiences in Wales and beyond the chance to discover the country’s growing number of vineyards and reveal its range of award-winning vintages, including those that have already reached international notoriety.
In a video message encouraging wine lovers to take the opportunity to discover what Wales’ vineyards have to offer, Sir Bryn Terfel, said: “I have been fortunate enough to travel the world and while doing so I have had amazing opportunities to taste some of the finest wines available and Welsh wines are beginning to creep up there. So, if you have not tried some, please do so during Welsh Wine Week…..May I wish you good health, iechyd da!”
If encouragement from the world-renowned bass-baritone wasn’t enough, Terfel’s support for Welsh Wine Week was joined by Welsh comedian Rob Brydon, a man whose culinary knowledge has been well documented through his road trip adventures with Steve Coogan.
There are almost 30 vineyards in Wales, and all are owned by independently-minded pioneers using Wales’ unique micro-climates to produce small quantity, terroir-driven, quality wines.
Following a period of non-existent tourism for several months due to the coronavirus pandemic, participating Welsh vineyards hope the variety of events being organised will encourage sales over the remainder of the summer as business re-starts. Thanks to the lifting of lockdown restrictions on many outdoor spaces in Wales, most Welsh vineyards have reopened to the public for outdoor visits, with indoor restrictions due to lift on 3rd August.
From 27th July, Welsh Wine Week will give its audiences access to exclusive competitions and interviews with Welsh vineyards on the dedicated Welsh Wine Week website.
Details of all vineyards hosting tasting events are on the official site and attendees are encouraged to buy a bottle beforehand to sample during the tasting event to be part of the experience.
