The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Wales has responded positively to Rhun ap Iorwerth MS’s first statement to the Senedd as First Minister, particularly his commitments to job creation, business support and building a stronger, more competitive Welsh economy.
It welcomed the emphasis on growing stronger Welsh firms and increasing the number of medium-sized businesses that can scale, export and retain value in Wales.
Joshua Miles, Head of FSB Wales, said:
“We are encouraged by the First Minister’s clear ambition to create jobs, support businesses and develop a Welsh economy that is outward-looking and competitive. Small businesses are the backbone of the Welsh economy and we share the vision of growing more medium-sized firms that can scale up, export successfully and keep economic value here, right across Wales.
FSB Wales urged the new Welsh Government to maintain momentum in its first 100 days and beyond, ensuring that small business priorities, such as cutting business rates burdens, setting up a new Welsh Development Agency and supporting the everyday challenges faced by entrepreneurs, are embedded in every economic decision.
    Mr Miles continued:
“Small businesses stand ready to drive a stronger and more resilient Welsh economy, but they need an environment that enables them to thrive.
“Giving firms some financial headroom through business rates reform, while removing the obstacles that prevent SMEs from accessing procurement, would boost confidence where it’s needed most.
“Our message to the First Minister is straightforward: assess every policy against a single test — will it help small businesses to invest, create jobs and secure contracts? If we get that right, we can unlock lasting growth and support thriving communities across Wales.”
