Two inspirational Welsh educators have been announced as Gold Winners at the 2024 Pearson National Teaching Awards, considered the ‘Oscars’ of the teaching profession.
Jo Wyatt, a Higher Level Teaching Assistant at Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, has been announced as the Gold Winner for Teaching Assistant of the Year.
Jo’s transformative approach helps her students develop a sense of identity and self-love using unique techniques, such as using mirrors to reflect their potential and introducing them to her therapy dog Bella. Her commitment extends to sharing her knowledge with peers, educating them on trauma-informed practices, and helping to create a nurturing classroom environment for all students.
Meanwhile, Alexis Dabee Saltmarsh, a Lecturer of Automotive and Aeronautical Engineering at Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone, Gwent has been announced as the Gold Winner for Further Education Lecturer of the Year, with her reveal featured on BBC’s The One Show.
During the programme, Alexis received a Zoom call from British space scientist, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, who revealed the incredible news. Alexis was praised for her commitment to nurturing future talent, while simultaneously advocating for equality and diversity in STEM
Selected from thousands of nominees, the Wales-based educators have been recognised for their exceptional contribution to both students and the wider community.
The Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration that honours the outstanding achievements and transformative impact of educators. Run by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity, and sponsored by Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, the awards are an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the pivotal roles teachers, support staff, colleges, schools and early years educators play in inspiring young people, every single day.
During the glittering awards ceremony, 16 outstanding educators were recognised as Gold Award Winners in their respective categories. Held at the Brewery in Central London and hosted by TV presenter and broadcaster Gaby Roslin, the evening brought together Silver Winners, industry peers, colleagues and special guests to share experiences and celebrate their achievements. The night capped off a week of coverage on BBC’s The One Show, celebrating the awards.

The Minister for Further and Higher Education, Vikki Howells said: “Having been a teacher myself for many years, I know the pride and privilege those working in the sector feel in teaching children and young people. I am delighted that Jo and Alexis’ hard work has been rewarded and I know everyone working in education in Wales will be boosted by the recognition of two colleagues at the National Teaching Awards.
