Residents across Wales are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote ahead of the upcoming Senedd election, with just five weeks remaining until the deadline.

The election will take place on 7 May, but anyone wishing to take part must be registered by midnight on Monday 20 April.

Research has shown that certain groups, including young people, students and those who have recently moved home, are less likely to be registered, raising concerns that many could miss out on having their say.

Registering to vote can be completed online in just five minutes via the UK Government website.

Once registered, voters will have several options on how to cast their vote. These include voting in person at a polling station, voting by post, or appointing someone they trust to vote on their behalf, known as a proxy vote.

Unlike some other elections, voters in Wales will not need to show photo ID when voting in this Senedd election.

Electoral Commission Wales is encouraging people to check their details as soon as possible to avoid missing the deadline.

Rhydian Thomas, Head of the Electoral Commission Wales, said:

“It’s important that people check they’re ready to vote ahead of the upcoming Senedd election on 7 May. All voters must be registered, and some may need to apply for a postal or proxy vote. 16–17-year-olds and foreign nationals living in Wales are also eligible to vote at this election, and photo ID will not be required.

“If you’ve recently changed your name, address or moved home since you last registered, it takes just five minutes to update your details online. Checking now helps make sure you can vote in a way that’s right for you.”

Eligible voters are also being reminded that 16 and 17-year-olds, as well as foreign nationals living in Wales, can take part in the election.

Further information about registering and voting options is available on the official Senedd election website.
