St Asaph walking football team claimed victory in the over 65’s category at the World Cup tournament in Copenhagen earlier this month after training at Denbighshire Leisure Ltd’s facility.

The fabulous 5-a-side team trained for the tournament at X20 St Asaph and comprised of players from North and South Wales, who faced strong competition from countries around the world including Finland, Sweden, Denmark and previous winner Gibraltar.

Spurred on by their big win, the Wales team went on to compete in their first running football international competition the following day where they swept yet another victory. Seven of the squad were from North Wales, covering St Asaph, Amlwch, Connah’s Quay and Coedpoeth.

Chair of Wales Walking Football Federation and team member Hedley Austin said “Although Covid restrictions meant that there was a limited number of teams taking part in this delayed annual tournament, we nevertheless faced some spirited competition, including from the defending champions Gibraltar. Our travelling squad was proud to represent Wales in the international tournament, and proud to finish as winners of the walking football tournament; winning the regular 5-a-side competition was a bonus. Every member of the squad did us proud.”

Speaking of the 4G pitch at X20 St Asaph, John Oliver, member of the victorious team, explained that their victory would not have been possible with the Denbighshire Leisure Ltd facilities in St Asaph.

Managing Director of Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, Jamie Groves said “X20 St Asaph is now one of our flagship facilities, with investments in both the indoor and out offer in recent years. I’m thrilled to hear we have helped this team develop and cannot wait to see how they progress! On behalf of everyone at Denbighshire Leisure, I’d like to congratulate the whole team for their fantastic success and look forward to welcoming them back to train for their next tournament!”
