Construction work is set to get underway soon at Islwyn High School in Oakdale, marking the start of an exciting project to deliver a new multi-use games area (MUGA) and a specialist pupil support centre.

The scheme, approved by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet in 2024, will see around £950,000 invested into the improvements.

McAvoy has been appointed to carry out the work, with the project being managed by Caerphilly Homes, the Council’s housing division.  Work is scheduled to begin on 27 October 2025, with completion expected in the new year.

The new MUGA will be built within the school grounds, replacing the facility previously located at the former Oakdale Comprehensive School site.  The brownfield site is currently being redeveloped into Oakdale Place; a flagship mixed tenure development of eco homes.

Alongside the MUGA, Islwyn High School will create a multi-disciplinary pupil support area to provide specialist support and tailored interventions for pupils, helping them develop the skills and confidence to manage their learning and wellbeing.

Cllr Shayne Cook, Caerphilly Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said “The new MUGA and pupil support facilities at Islwyn High School are a fantastic example of how our investment in housing and community infrastructure go hand in hand.

“As work progresses on the Oakdale Place housing development, it’s important that we continue to deliver on our commitment to the wider community by providing modern, accessible amenities that benefit everyone.”
