Work will start on the new modular building to be constructed at Priory Church in Wales School site in Brecon.
The building funded by a Welsh Government Flying Start capital grant of £820,000.00 will provide Flying Start childcare and Foundation Phase provision as well as a multi-agency office space for professionals to support families.
Following a tender process R G Stones Modular buildings have been awarded the contract to carry out the building work on the site starting next month.
The new building and outdoor space will provide high quality, free Flying Start childcare for two-year-olds and will also be used to run parenting groups and training. In addition, there will be space for 3 and 4 year olds to access Foundation Phase and Childcare Offer provision.
The building will also have a small multi agency office and a contact room where professionals such as Health Visitors and Speech and Language Therapists can meet families.
Eligible Flying Start families will be able to access the provision from the summer term. Priory Pre-School have been awarded the contract for the Flying Start provision from 26 April this year. It is hoped that the site will be open from 26 April 2022 in time for the start of the summer term.
Flying Start provision in Brecon is currently available at Cylch Meithrin Aberhonddu and will move to the new purpose-built facility at Priory Church in Wales school as soon as the new modular building is ready.
Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Rachel Powell says: “I’m really pleased that building works can begin in the coming weeks. Plans can now progress at pace to provide additional Flying Start childcare and the Foundation Phase nursery.
“This site is a good focal point of the community and a great opportunity to have services in one place. It will provide childcare as well as office and community spaces. It will allow families from Brecon to benefit from a co-ordinated and integrated approach to early help services.”
Cllr Matthew Dorrance, the local Councilor for St John Ward and Chair of the Priory Pre-School Trustees, added: “We are bringing Flying Start services closer to home for local families. That’s great news for our community. Our brand new centre will be just a short pram push away for the families we will be supporting.”
Additional Flying Start Capital funding and Brecon Town Council funding has been secured to build a new playground on Pendre Field next to the school. The Flying Start funding will be used to build a new playground for 0-4 year olds and the Town Council funding will be used to buy play equipment for children aged over five. Dragon Play & Sports Ltd have been awarded the contract to carry out the work which is to be completed by the end of March this year.
