Young people in Springfield, Pontllanfraith are celebrating the opening of new play facilities this half term.

Springfield has received upgrades to its existing play area, including new toddler and junior swings, a see saw, springers, fencing and an inclusive wheelchair friendly roundabout.  A brand new skate park has also been installed, following consultation with the local community.

A total of £134,000 has been invested into the facilities thanks to Caerphilly County Borough Council’s flagship Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) programme.

The council recently announced completion of its main WHQS programme which has seen over £260 million invested into refurbishments to tenants’ homes throughout the county borough, as well as wider environmental improvements such as play areas, skate parks, outdoor gyms, landscaping and increased car parking.

Alfie Davies, aged 11 and from Springfield, said “I’ve been really excited for the new skatepark to open.  It has some big ramps that I can’t wait to start practising on with my scooter!”

The councils Cabinet Member for Social Care and Housing, Cllr Shayne Cook, added “Alongside the improvements made to our tenants’ homes, the WHQS programme has seen a vast range of new facilities delivered in communities throughout the county borough.  Having suitable outdoor spaces is key not only in encouraging people to become more active, but it also plays a huge role in improving wellbeing.

“It’s fantastic to see young people already making the most of the new facilities in Springfield!”
