5 Ways to Boost the Security in Your Home

Nobody wants to think about the realities of home invasions, burglaries, and even more violent crimes that can happen in the home. But unfortunately, they’re something we all need to consider.

Home security should be a top priority for any homeowner (and renters, too!) because your safety – to a large extent – lies in your hands. Taking the precautions necessary to protect your home and your family is crucial.

Here are just a few simple ways to boost your security and peace of mind.

    Install Strong Doors and Windows

Some people would be appalled to realize just how easily their doors and window latches can be broken to gain access to their homes.

Weak doors and windows, especially in older buildings, can be a primary cause of break-ins. Luckily, this can be remedied fairly easily by upgrading your doors and windows. Look into doors and windows made from more resilient materials, roller shutter doors, and even security gates to keep your family, home, and belongings safe.

    Upgrade Your Locks

Even if there’s no chance of someone busting your entire door off its hinges, you might still want to take a look at the strength of your locks since statistics show that more than 50% of burglars gain access via a door.

High-security locks are a great option for those who want to level up their security. High-security locks are made from stronger metals, have increased bolt strength, and a more complex lock cylinder that can’t easily be picked.

    Install a Home Security System

Of course, some of us like to feel a little more in control, which is why a home security system will be your best friend. A good alarm system (especially when complete with security cameras) will help you keep tabs on your property, ward off suspicious characters, and quickly alert the authorities if anything goes awry.

Better yet, a smart security system can be integrated with your smartphone and other devices and allow you remote access to the system, as well as your locks.

    Use Outdoor Lighting Strategically

Nobody wants to be caught lurking around the home they’re trying to burgle. This is where simple lighting can be your savior!

Installing outdoor security lighting (on your front porch and anywhere else where someone might gain access) is a great way to illuminate the space. This can do two things: make it easier for you or your neighbors to identify a potential threat and prevent criminals from bothering to try in the first place.

Make it Look Like You’re Around

Finally, understand how the illusion of occupancy can prevent your space from being broken into. When it comes to theft, most burglars will only attempt to enter an unoccupied home.

This means you’re more likely to be targeted when you head out for dinner or go away for a vacation. To eliminate this potential issue, simply pretend you’re at home! It might be a waste of energy, but leave a light on or use timed lights and other electronics to mimic your usual patterns.
