Sculpture by artists from Italy, Sweden, Australian and the UK will feature in the first The exhibition features figurative sculptures by Dr Alan Pascuzzi (bronze), Nicolai Nickson (marble and wood), Erin Knight (bronze), and Sarah Burton (steel and ceramics).
Curated by Life: Full Colour founder, Sara McKee, the free exhibition will open for four weeks from 1 October 2021 and it brings new artists and fresh work to Wales. Themes explored by the artists range from making choices through to perseverance.
Sara McKee says, “We’re a huge supporter of Wales based artists and our shows to date have provided people with the opportunity to engage with Welsh creatives and support the local arts sector. However, we also want to bring new work from different countries to Wales so people can experience art from all over the world. While the pandemic means we can’t bring the artists themselves, we can bring their work to Caernarfon and this show is just the starting point of us bringing more international art to Wales.”
Meet the artists
Dr Alan Pascuzzi
Dr Alan Pascuzzi is an acclaimed painter, sculptor, author, and arts educator. A Fulbright scholar to Florence, Alan obtained his PhD from Washington University with specialisations in Greek and Roman sculpture and Italian Renaissance art. A professional artist as well, Alan has several permanent frescoes, paintings and sculptures in the centre of Florence, other cities in Italy and Australia.
Alan’s sculptures appearing at Life: Full Colour are all male figures in bronze, representing the struggles of humanity. Visitors to the show will be also able to take in photographs of Alan’s sculptures by Susan Blagden, a priest in the Church in Wales and a photographer. Plus, Susan will be running contemplative sessions where participants can explore the connection between the sculptures’ themes and their own life.
Nicolai Nickson
An alumnus of the New York Studio School, Nicolai is a Swedish artist whose sculptures are carved from marble and wood. They usually represent figures in various existential states. His work combines shapes made of different materials with varying texture, where he lets soft sanded surfaces meet rougher chiselled areas.
Nicolai’s sculpture Either / Or will appear in the exhibition, which shows a marble figure with wooden hands holding an apple and an orange representing the moment of making choices.
Erin Knight
Erin Knight is a Western Australian artist and educator who works across the mediums of painting and sculpture. Predominantly a painter, her work also explores mixed media to create rich, evocative, and surreal spaces. Erin has been an art educator for over 28 years, always indulging in her own practice throughout those years, exhibiting in group shows and completing commissions in both sculpture and 2D works.
Erin’s bronze figure, Carmen, is composed and relaxed as the world whirls around her, evoking a feeling one might experience if in a world of their own or during meditation.
Sarah Burton
Sarah Burton has been making sculpture for ten years. In 2016 she finished three years of study at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art in London, gaining a Sculpture Diploma there. Since then, she has exhibited in London galleries, and in 2019 organized and presented The Sculpture Show at Bankside Gallery, showing her own work alongside the sculpture, painting and ceramics of eight other artists. In her practice, Sarah has focused on making figurative work in abstracted forms.
Her steel works featured in the show are inspired by people or clothing from ancient times. The process is one of cutting hundreds of pieces from sheets of rusted steel, shaping them into figurative forms like an intricate jigsaw puzzle, and finally welding them together.
While The Tulip People were originally inspired by deconstructing a tulip and seeing that the petal shapes looked figurative. They are made of fired paper clay, and stand on steel rods, on a base of solid oak.
The sculpture show will be available to view at Life: Full Colour’s Caernarfon gallery from the 1 to 31 October 2021. All pieces will be for sale.
