Swansea’s spectacular annual fireworks show is set to return this year – everyone is welcome, it’ll be free to all and will take place over the waters of the bay.
Thousands of families and individuals are expected to attend. They will enjoy the show on the wide open spaces of Swansea Beach and the prom.
Given that Covid is still with us, organisers Swansea Council are determined to try to make sure that large scale events are put on safely and for people to enjoy.
To allow as many people as possible to attend the fireworks show safely the best location is Swansea Bay; people will be outdoors and will have plenty of room to spread out.
High tides mean that a show on November 5 isn’t possible for this location, so the best alternative date – Friday, November 12 – is when the show will take place. Low tide that evening will means maximum space for spectators.
It’s the first time the show hasn’t taken place on November 5. Covid passes are not required – this type of event is exempt.
Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “Our display on November 12 will be great and the low tide will mean that the thousands who normally attend will have plenty of space to feel comfortable and safe.
“We really wanted to hold the event on November 5 as usual – but the tide just wasn’t with us this year.
“We considered other locations such as St Helen’s sports ground and Singleton Park for November 5 but, for a number of reasons, they wouldn’t have been as good as the bay.
“A number of other major fireworks displays across Wales have been cancelled because of the logistics of the venues and other pandemic-related issues. However, we’re determined to put on a show even if it means breaking with tradition in order to be able to make it as safe as possible.
“Last year we couldn’t host the show due to the pandemic; this year, as we work our way back, we didn’t want to deny a bumper crowd the chance to enjoy the fireworks.
“So please come and enjoy the display – and remember, remember, it’s the 12th of November!”
The event is due to take place from 6.30-8pm on November 12, with parking available at a number of locations including the Recreation Ground, the Civic Centre and city centre car parks.
It will mean some temporary short-term road arrangements for the evening. They will include the temporary closure of Oystermouth Road (Between Sketty Lane and Glamorgan Street) from around 5-9pm.
The free show over the bay in November 2019 attracted around 30,000 spectators.
