‘Wyllie Bends’ road safety study timeline agreed

Caerphilly County Borough Council has set out the key timeline to undertake an independent road safety study of the B4251, known locally as ‘Wyllie bends’.

The council’s Cabinet recently agreed to re-evaluate existing safety measures at the site and also agreed to work closely with the family of Laurie Jones who died following an accident on the road in 2019.
CCBC Chief Executive Christina Harrhy has now written to the family to provide an estimated timeframe and key milestones to undertake an independent road safety study.

Officers are currently preparing a briefing document which will be shared with the family before Christmas. The council then aims to appoint an independent consultant in February to undertake this key piece of work.

Once a draft report has been developed by the consultant, the recommendations will  be shared with the family and local councillors. It is anticipated that the draft report will be ready in March.

Following this, a report will be prepared for consideration by the council’s Cabinet consideration in May/June.

Leader of Council, Cllr Sean Morgan said, “We will endeavour to ensure the family and local councillors are engaged throughout the process, I also recognise that there is wider public interest in this matter, so throughout the process we will be providing regular updates to the community too.”

“This stretch of highway has seen several unfortunate accidents in recent years, two of which were sadly fatal. I’m sure the community will welcome the fact that we are responding positively to the concerns that have been raised and will keep everyone updated about progress,” he added.
