The next phase of Porthcawl’s ongoing regeneration will begin next week with the installation of the first of several new pedestrian crossings.
The crossing work is being undertaken by Aldi as part of a package of highway, pedestrian and cycleway improvements that Bridgend County Borough Council negotiated while granting permission for the development of a new food store at nearby Salt Lake.
It will be constructed at the Portway where it will form part of the council’s efforts to ensure that shoppers and visitors will be able to move freely and enjoy quick, convenient access between Salt Lake and the Eastern Promenade, and the town centre.
As the work will require a temporary closure of the carriageway, it has been carefully timed to take place after the peak Christmas trading period.
The crossing will be signal-controlled and will also help people wishing to access both new and forthcoming regeneration developments such the refurbished waterfront area, the planned adjacent seafront park or the new Aldi food store.
Together with a second crossing which will be installed as part of a planned extension of Dock Street, it will also provide convenient access to the new Metrolink transport interchange.
Ensuring that people can move around freely and easily forms an essential part of our placemaking plans for Porthcawl.
The installation of this new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will help form a vital part of maintaining close links between the town centre, and the new developments that we are working to provide as part of the ongoing regeneration.
While some inconvenience will be unavoidable during the crossing’s construction, every effort will be made to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.
