Primary school pupils from across Caerphilly County Borough came together to compete in the Primary School Cluster League Football Finals, showcasing teamwork, skill and a shared passion for the game.

The competition, open to pupils in Years 5 and 6, followed a structured league format, with teams playing 7 a side matches in squads of up to 10. Schools first competed across three rounds within five cluster areas: Blackwood, Caerphilly, Risca, Upper Rhymney and Ystrad Mynach.

At the end of the cluster stages, the top two teams from each area progressed to the finals. Finalists were then split into groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi finals before competing for the title.

The final saw Ystrad Mynach Primary School take on Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili, with Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili crowned overall winners.

A total of 10 teams reached the finals:

    • Blackwood: Blackwood Primary and Rhiw Syr Dafydd
    • Caerphilly: Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili and Cwrt Rawlin
    • Risca: Abercarn and Cwm Gwyddon
    • Upper Rhymney: St Gwladys and Ysgol Gymraeg Gilfach Fargoed
    • Ystrad Mynach: Ystrad Mynach Primary and Bro Allta

Across the wider Cluster League competition, 62 teams took part, giving pupils the opportunity to represent their schools, develop their football skills and experience competitive sport.

The event was supported by students from Coleg y Cymoedd and Sport Leaders from The Lewis School, whose contribution helped ensure the smooth running of the competition.

The Cluster League programme forms part of the council’s ongoing commitment to increasing participation in sport and physical activity, as outlined in its Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019 to 2029. The initiative aims to create more opportunities for young people to stay active, build confidence and enjoy sport within their communities.
