Let’s explore the manner in which mornings, minds, and coffee intersect, and see how the joys of your first cup of joe are as uniquely personal as they are universal.

    Every morning, more than 1 billion people all around the globe wake up with a craving for coffee. To satisfy that craving, over 2 billion servings are consumed throughout the day. With such staggering numbers, it may be hard to believe that each of those 2 billion cuppas has something unique about it—and yet it absolutely does. When it comes to your morning coffee, you’re faced with a myriad of options: whole bean or instant? Pre-ground or ground freshly? Chemex, moka pot, French press, or perhaps a fancy bean-to-cup machine? What you end up choosing says a lot about you, weaves itself deeply into your routine, and defines what your priorities and personal rhythm look like.

    Let’s say you’re a fan of capsules: what’s not to like when what they offer is one of the quickest ways to brew yourself a cuppa? No complicated controls on your trusty capsule machine, no lengthy routines, no hassle—nothing to slow down a busy bee like you as you rush around the kitchen, ready for yet another day of hustling! On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got the proponents of slow brewing: armed with manual coffee grinders and specialty coffee beans, they craft a mindful morning ritual that’s meant to ground them, soothe them, and put them at ease before the day’s stresses begin.

    The two journeys towards that morning cuppa couldn’t be any more different, and, what’s more, none of the two are wrong. They serve to accomplish exactly what the coffee drinker needs, be it a speedy pick-me-up or a meditative practice. Some studies suggest that caffeine has a positive effect on memory too, so those numbers are less likely to be forgotten after you’ve had your caffeine fix. Even more impressive is the fact that the way in which that humble cuppa benefits your brain doesn’t seem to be exclusively short-term: research has associated long-term regular coffee consumption with a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. So, it turns out that coffee does much more than just give your brain a jolt; it improves the brain’s capacity, strengthens memory, and even protects the brain later in life.

That surge of energy is far from an illusion: coffee has been proven to increase muscle endurance and exercise results when consumed prior to a workout session. Interestingly, it seems to lead to a higher level of activity in general: one study has concluded that people who drink coffee regularly tend to have a higher daily step count compared to those who don’t. What’s the conclusion?.. Whether you’ve got a busy day at work or an intense workout ahead, there’s truly no reason not to enjoy that morning cup of joe.

    You may be a slow brewer or a quick morning sipper; you may love manual coffee grinders or prefer your brewing rituals automated; you may brew for brain, or brew for brawn… Whichever way of enjoying your coffee appeals most to you, it’s clear that caffeine has plenty of good reasons to occupy such an important place in our morning routines. So caffeinate yourself to your heart’s content: there’s no shame whatsoever in relying on that first cup of the day to wake you up!
