A partially converted former South Wales chapel listed for sale at just £1 sold for 85,500 times this figure after creating a storm of interest at auction.
Auctioneer Gemma Vaughan, of Paul Fosh Auctions, said the online auction came alive when the ex-chapel, the first lot listed in the, went ‘live’.
Gemma said: “It was really awesome to see the level of interest created by Soar Chapel. Interest was there from when the catalogue went live with the chapel listed with a guide price of just £1. It was then up to potential buyers to determine where the eventual price ended up.
“And the enthusiasm carried through into the bidding at the auction. Eventually when the virtual hammer fell, we’d recorded a phenomenal 168 bids for the lot from a total of 12 individual bidders each as keen as each other to land the property.
“The property, which is partly renovated and converted for residential uses, sold for £85,500.

Bidders recognised that this was a rare opportunity to acquire what is a substantial three-bedroom former chapel which enjoys really lovely views and offers genuine potential to create an impressive residential home.
The accommodation is arranged with three bedrooms and a bathroom to the ground floor, with the kitchen and living accommodation positioned on the first floor, taking advantage of the property’s elevated position and views.
The property is not fully completed and does require finishing and remedial work in places but does represent an opportunity to acquire something genuinely different and unusual.
Soar Chapel is situated on Graig Terrace in Bedlinog, within the Treharris area of Merthyr Tydfil. The property occupies an elevated position, with the surrounding countryside providing an attractive backdrop.
Bedlinog offers everyday amenities locally, while nearby Treharris and Merthyr Tydfil provide a wider range of shops, schools, leisure facilities and services. The property is also well placed for access to the wider South Wales Road network, with connections towards Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd and Cardiff.
The next Paul Fosh Auctions sale, when varied property lots will be on offer, starts at 12pm on Tuesday, October 6 and ends from 2pm on Thursday, October 8.
