Construction of the new Maesyffynnon Extra Care facility in Aberaman is now complete, and has today been handed over to the Council.

The Club Street building has been delivered via a partnership between Linc Cymru and the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council – creating 40-state-of-the-art apartments for older people on the old Maesyffynnon Residential Care Home site. It has become Rhondda Cynon Taf’s second Extra Care facility after Ty Heulog in Talbot Green, and is the first of five brand new Extra Care buildings being delivered.

Additional facilities will open in Treorchy, Mountain Ash, Porth and Pontypridd in the future – with the Pontypridd scheme, Cwrt yr Orsaf, currently being built on the former Pontypridd Magistrates’ Court site. The wider £50m investment will increase the number of Extra Care beds in Rhondda Cynon Taf to 300.

The construction phase of the Maesyffynnon facility was completed on Friday, May 1, after the final weeks of the project were completed while observing social distancing guidelines due to the Coronavirus national emergency. The building has now been handed over to the Council by Linc Cymru.

The three-storey building includes a dining room, café, hair salon, therapy room, lounge, laundry room and activity room. There is also a car park and a garden area – to be maintained alongside Blaengwawr Primary School.

Councillor Geraint Hopkins, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Adult Community Services, said: “I’m very pleased construction is complete on the impressive Maesyffynon Extra Care facility, which will help older people live as active and independent lives as possible and receive targeted support for their needs. This site in Aberaman is the first of five new facilities for RCT, in order to improve our care provision.

“I’d like to thank local residents for their patience and cooperation while the Council and Linc Cymru carried out construction of the building, which will serve local people and be at the heart of the community for years to come.”
