Proposals for a new Aldi supermarket in St Mellons have been unveiled, with residents invited to share their views ahead of a planning application being submitted to Cardiff Council.
Property developer Robert Hitchins Limited, in partnership with Aldi, is looking to bring a new food store to Plot A, Wern Fawr Lane, at Eastern Business Park. The scheme would repurpose a surplus parking area and represents what developers describe as a significant £7 million investment into the local economy.
If approved, the development is expected to create up to 40 new jobs at the St Mellons store. Aldi says roles would be paid at its industry-leading rate of £13.35 per hour, which is above the National Living Wage.

The plans also include a total of 108 car parking spaces, featuring five accessible bays and six parent and child spaces, aimed at making the store easy and convenient to access for a wide range of customers.
A new Aldi store in St Mellons would improve access to affordable food shopping, with the nearest Aldi currently located more than three miles away in Pontprennau. Developers say this forces many people in St Mellons and surrounding communities including Marshfield, Trowbridge, Castleton and Peterstone Wentlooge to travel further or rely on more expensive alternatives.

The proposals also highlight benefits for workers based at Eastern Business Park, where recent investment has already seen the introduction of a gym and café. The addition of a supermarket is expected to provide greater convenience for employees, reducing the need to travel elsewhere during the working day.
Developers say the proposal could support the wider local economy while enhancing the range of retail options available in the area.

A community consultation is now underway, giving residents the opportunity to review the plans and provide feedback before a formal planning application is submitted.
The consultation opened on Monday 16 March and will run until midnight on Monday 13 April. Feedback gathered during this period will be used to help shape the final proposals, which will be included in a Pre-application Consultation report submitted to the council.
As part of the process, an in-person consultation event will take place at Old St Mellons Village Hall on Thursday 26 March between 3pm and 7pm. Members of the public are invited to attend, meet the project team, ask questions and share their views.
Aldi says the proposed store would offer local residents improved access to its range of low-cost, high-quality products, helping to increase competition and choice within the area.
