Swansea Building Society demonstrated its resilience despite operating in a challenging economic environment in its 2022 results. It achieved its highest ever growth in its balance sheet, supported by record profits—all following a six-year period of sustained, controlled growth. The Society’s total assets, mortgage balances, savings, capital and profits all reached record highs in the 12 months to December 31, 2022. A former North Wales detective has been recruited by one of the region’s leading law firms. Tim Wynne Evans, who worked on cases including Wales’s worst serial killer Peter Moore, has joined Gamlins Law as a case worker and investigator. Tim will work with the firm’s Crime Department, assisting them with the preparation of defence cases for clients. This includes several complex conspiracy cases, a specialist area for Gamlins Law. Outpost, a new bar and kitchen promising laid-back dining & drinks from breakfast until 5pm – and a ‘small plates’ menu every Thursday to Saturday evening – will be opening in Cardiff later this summer. A North Wales woman whose one-year-old daughter is living with a rare brain tumour has welcomed news of a research centre. Mum-of-three Corinne Wardle, from Flint, has called the launch of the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) “amazing”. It’s after her baby daughter Molly Wardle-Hampton, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive ependymoma (a type of high-grade glioma) after a radical change in the size of her head. Local chimney and boiler equipment specialist The Flue and Chimney Warehouse Ltd has moved to larger industrial premises on the Gwaelod y Garth Industrial Estate in north Cardiff. After 10 years in 2,000 sq ft premises nearby, the company has signed a 10 year lease on the 11,000 sq ft Unit 3 at an annual rental of £66,000.  The landlord was represented in the transaction by the Cardiff office of global property consultant Knight Frank. Scientists at Aberystwyth University are researching whether grazing alpacas alongside other animals could help farmers tackle climate change. The new research project will explore the efficiency and environmental benefits of grazing different species together, such as sheep, goats and alpacas. The work at the University’s Pwllpeiran Upland Research Centre builds on previous research, which found that mixed grazing of sheep with cattle improved lamb growth rates and animal health, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. A local social enterprise has joined forces with the Isle of Anglesey County Council and community hubs to provide free nutritious meals to Anglesey residents. As the cost-of-living crisis takes its toll, the aim of the project is to help tackle food poverty by providing quality meals in community freezers across the Island.
