Swansea Building Society has made generous donations, totalling £7,000, to ten foodbanks and two local charities this December, driven by concerns over the cost-of-living crisis affecting many of the communities it serves across Wales. The building society, with branch offices in Swansea, Mumbles, Carmarthen and Cowbridge, has donated £500 to each of the ten foodbanks, which span all the geographic areas covered by its branch and admin offices. The foodbanks benefitting from the donations are Carmarthen, Sketty, Neath, Port Talbot, Ammanford, Llanelli, Taff Ely, Cardiff, Vale (Barry), and Abergavenny. A man has been sentenced to prison after he was convicted on 9th December of the murder of a man in Caewern, Neath in April this year after a two week trial. Yesterday, Thursday 22nd December, Emmett Peter Morrison, aged 38, from Heol Catwg, Caewern, was given a life sentence, with a minimum term of 28 years following the discovery of the body of 66 year old Timothy Dundon in a property on Heol Catwg on Wednesday 27th April. This festive season staff at Newport-based Kilsby Williams have been collecting food and essential items for their local food banks. Staff at the tax and accountancy specialist were asked to bring in food and non-food products to add to the collection and all donations will be split between Risca and Newport Foodbanks. The charity drive which resulted in four boxes of goods for the foodbanks was led by tax manager Lucy Lloyd. Glenda Rees from Cadoxton, Barry, was looking forward to an extra special Christmas with her daughter Gemma but instead, she is planning Gemma’s funeral after she died suddenly from cardiac arrest. Gemma Rees, 42, a mother of four who worked as a carer for young people with autism at Beechwood College in Sully, passed away unexpectedly on 14 November. When the Children Law team at Harding Evans discovered that Newport City Council had lost regular contributors of Christmas gifts for children from low income families this year, and with Christmas fast approaching, they offered to help. The Ramblers Cymru flagship project, Paths to Wellbeing, which is working with the community in Llanybydder, Carmarthenshire recently opened up the path at Pen-Lan. Unfortunately, the path had become flooded after fly tipping had taken place in the local stream with bags of rubbish polluting the water and causing it to disperse over the paths, making it impossible for people to walk there. Macmillan Cancer Support has warned that Wales has once again registered its worst ever performance on cancer treatment targets since current records began. Data released today shows that in October only 52.2% of people with cancer started their treatment on time – leaving 810 people to face anxious delays in just one month alone.
