The brand-new home for Fitzalan High School has accomplished its topping out milestone, as construction reaches the highest point at the new school building in Leckwith. Jointly funded by Cardiff Council and Welsh Government, the £64m scheme is the city’s latest to be delivered under the Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme. Caerphilly Cabinet have recently endorsed the recommendation that the experimental traffic regulation orders at three primary schools within the borough be made permanent. The implementation of pedestrian and cycle zones were initially made on an experimental basis in September 2020, after funding was received from Welsh Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Response Fund; with the schemes being in force for a period of 18 months. To support the ongoing fight against Covid in our communities, free lateral flow tests (LFTs) are now available for collection from a number of locations across the city. A maximum of two boxes will be available per person, with each box containing seven individual tests. LFTs are also available from pharmacies (where to get rapid lateral flow tests – NHS) or can be ordered at gov.uk or by calling 119. A Welsh Government-led programme to test wastewater for COVID-19 has been expanded to cover all Welsh health boards and local authorities across 48 sites. The programme provides vital data on the prevalence of coronavirus in the community and was key to the early detection of the Omicron wave across Wales. The process of identifying coronavirus in wastewater was initially developed by scientists from Bangor University who have been working in partnership with the Welsh Government, Cardiff University, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy. A pilot taxi scheme has provided thousands of ‘green’ miles for drivers and passengers since starting last Autumn. Denbighshire is hosting the only North Wales pilot of the zero emission green taxi scheme. The Welsh Government, who are funding the scheme, recently set a goal of de-carbonising the taxi fleet entirely by 2028.
