A major new outdoor fitness destination is set to take shape at Cardiff Bay, with work due to begin next month on what will become the largest outdoor exercise area in a Cardiff park.
The Cardiff Bay Calisthenics Park will transform and expand the existing exercise facilities on Cardiff Bay Barrage into a free to use health and wellbeing hub, offering residents and visitors a wide range of exercise opportunities in a waterfront setting.
Construction work is due to begin in early August 2026 after the contract was awarded to Encon Construction.
The new facility will include a large calisthenics area featuring pull up bars, resistance equipment, tyre flips, sit up stations, jumping blocks and lunge steps. Three dedicated lanes with obstacles will provide cardiovascular agility challenges, while wheelchair accessible equipment will ensure the space can be enjoyed by people of all abilities.
Alongside the calisthenics area, the development will feature a sports practice zone and a half court football and basketball area with football skills challenges, rebound walls, football tennis and interactive target games.
Visitors will also be able to make use of a 120 metre warm up running loop, seating areas and a dedicated yoga and stretching area overlooking the water.
A central feature wall will offer climbing and grip strength activities, exercise guidance and shelter from coastal winds, helping create a year round outdoor fitness destination.
