The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Bob Derbyshire, has completed his final training session ahead of embarking on the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge this weekend.
Cllr Derbyshire is aiming to complete the feat of climbing Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen-y-Fan to raise funds for this chosen charities, , Buglife Cymru and RSPB Cymru. It will be his final fundraising challenge before finishing his term of office next month.
The Lord Mayor will be joined on the trek by several of his fellow Cardiff councillors including Leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, as well as representatives from Buglife Cymru and RSPB Cymru.
A regular swimmer, Cllr Derbyshire completed a two mile swimming challenge earlier this year in aid of his charities and has been walking regularly to ensure he’s ready for this weekend’s daunting task, including a practice trek up Pen-y-Fan and a final training session at the newly refurbished, state-of-the-art gym at Channel View Leisure Centre in Grangetown.

“Buglife Cymru and RSPB Cymru are two great charities that work closely with Cardiff Council to make sure the environment is a better place for everyone to enjoy. So I wanted to do my bit before I finished as Lord Mayor to contribute to that.
“I thought this was a very interesting challenge – I’ve never done anything like this before. It’s going to be very tough because it’s very long.
“We have to get from North Wales back down to South Wales, all in a day and climb three peaks on the way. The total distance is about 17km but of course half of that will be uphill. I’m getting on a bit now so it will be a challenge.”
