The Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach has had new high-efficiency LED floodlights installed to provide enhanced visibility and energy efficiency to the facility.

The project, supported by grant funding from Sport Wales, involved replacing the existing metal halide floodlights with Phillips LED floodlights. Both pitches were designed to achieve the specified lighting level of 500 lux to meet the required standards for the Welsh Rugby Union and Football Association of Wales.

SmartGEDi, a revolutionary lighting control solution, was also installed to reduce energy bills and consumption whilst also providing different switching options. The team at the Centre for Sporting Excellence can now choose from a range of lighting choices to suit their requirements and ensure maximum cost savings are achieved.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said “Upgrading to LED floodlights has been a fantastic decision for the CSE. They have not only significantly improved the quality of lighting for players and spectators, making it safer for evening training and matches but they support our sustainability goals and increase our energy efficiency.”

Owen Hathway, Sport Wales’ Assistant Director for Insight, Policy and Public Affairs, said: “Sport Wales is prioritising tackling climate change to ensure that we deliver an environment in which sport can continue to thrive for future generations. We were pleased to support this project to help the Centre for Sporting Excellence upgrade its facilities for multisport experiences, while reducing its carbon footprint.”

The Centre for Sporting Excellence has become a high profile sports facility working in partnership with Welsh Rugby Union, Football Association of Wales, Dragons Rugby and Coleg y Cymoedd. The centre delivers both elite and grassroot sports as well as providing community sessions during school holidays.
