RCT Council will shortly begin flood alleviation work at the Nant Cae Dudwg in Cilfynydd, having secured Welsh Government funding for the scheme.
The upcoming work will take place at the existing debris control facility upstream from the culvert inlet, located alongside Pant-du Road, and will deliver an upgrade to the facility while carrying out essential repairs. The scheme will also install an access ramp at the site, to ensure all future maintenance of the watercourse can be completed without difficultly – especially in times of heavy rain.
Funding from Welsh Government has been secured to deliver the £135,000 scheme – complementing the Council’s own contribution towards the work. DT Contracting has been appointed to carry out the works over the next four weeks. Site activity will begin from Monday, January 24.
Disruption to the local community as a result of the work is anticipated to be minimal. The contractor has advised that the public right of way near the works area will remain open at all times during the construction phase.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “Carrying out targeted work to reduce the risk of flooding in communities is a priority area of investment for the Council, as well as seeking external funding to complement the work. I’m pleased that Welsh Government support has been secured for the scheme at the Nant Cae Dudwg in Cilfynydd, which will upgrade the existing infrastructure and create a better site access.
“The Council will work closely with its contractor to complete the work as efficiently as possible over the next few weeks. Minimal disruption is expected locally, and the footpath nearby will be unaffected by the works activity.
“This work in Cilfynydd follows other targeted schemes which have started since the New Year – including a small scale flood alleviation scheme at Mostyn Street in Abercwmboi, work at Glenboi to replace the existing highway drainage pipes, and a scheme near Allen Street in Mountain Ash to repair and reconstruct sections of wall which form the banks of the watercourse.”
