Two rescue dogs have proven that a second chance can lead to extraordinary things. Max and Chase, both adopted from Cardiff Dogs Home, have officially become part of our dog section after successfully completing their training and being licensed on Wednesday, July 16.
Max, a black cocker spaniel, was brought in as a stray. Known then as Humbug, he showed early signs of intelligence, focus, and energy — traits that caught the attention of the rescue centre. Chase, a collie/spaniel cross, had a different start. Originally named Neptune, he came from an unwanted litter and was taken in at just nine weeks old by his handler, who immediately saw his potential.
Over the past six weeks, both dogs have undergone rigorous training in specialist detection. They completed three modules that now qualify them to detect drugs, cash, and firearms residue — vital skills that will assist in tackling serious and organised crime across south Wales.
Sergeant Nathan Burton praised the duo’s achievement, saying:
“Max and Chase are fantastic examples of how rescue dogs, given the right guidance, can achieve incredible things. Their determination, loyalty, and instinct make them perfect additions to our police dog team.
“Our dog handlers and instructors put in an incredible amount of time, skill and dedication to train these dogs. Their hard work is vital in preparing these dogs to support frontline policing and keep our communities safe.”
Cardiff Dogs Home, which facilitated both dogs’ initial rescue and rehoming, expressed pride and joy at the news.
Cardiff Dogs Home Manager, Maria Bailie, said:
“Max and Chase’s achievements show the huge difference that matching the right dogs to the right homes can make to their lives. Although they both found themselves in our care for different reasons, they both clearly needed a job to keep them happy and mentally stimulated.
“The team at the Dogs Home have an excellent working relationship with South Wales Police and everyone is delighted that Max and Chase have found exciting new careers for themselves as well as happy, caring homes.”
