RCT Council’s contractor for the demolition of the former Bingo Hall and Angharad’s Nightclub buildings in Pontypridd requires a further two Sunday road closures – taking place in the Town Centre over the next two weekends.
Having started the demolition in March, contractor Walters Ltd continues to make significant progress at the prominent site. The work will enable the area’s future redevelopment by the Council after years of being derelict – much in the same way Llys Cadwyn has transformed the old Taff Vale site.
In order to safely make progress in recent weeks, the contractor required three consecutive all-day Sunday road closures in Pontypridd Town Centre in June – and these will now be repeated on July 18 and July 25, from 7.30am.
Pontypridd Town Centre businesses will remain OPEN for business as usual at all times, and all accesses for pedestrians will be maintained.
The road closures include Taff Street (from its northern junction with Market Street to High Street), Mill Street (between numbers 1 and 11a), High Street (the entire length) and Market Street (between Church Street and its southern junction with Taff Street). An alternative route for motorists will be signposted via Crossbrook Street, Gelliwastad Road, Catherine Street and Sardis Road.
Vehicular access within the town centre will only be allowed as far as the northern junction of Taff Street and Market Street. Motorists will then be able to proceed via Market Street and Church Street, but will not be able to continue on Taff Street. Access for emergency services will be maintained. Buses are unaffected as no Sunday services travel through the town centre.
The demolition process will be completed by late summer 2021. The Council received Welsh Government funding to acquire the site, and has also received further funding from the Transforming Towns initiative for the current works.
