Grand Pavilion set to close ahead of major redevelopment

As the curtain comes down on Bridgend Youth Theatre’s final performance of We Will Rock You on Sunday 4 February, so too begins a brand new chapter in the Grand Pavilion’s rich 92-year history.

From 5 February 2024, the entire Grade II building will be closed to the public to prepare for its major redevelopment, following a successful bid submitted by Bridgend County Borough Council in partnership with Awen Cultural Trust to the UK Government’s Levelling Up programme.

The redevelopment will safeguard this much-loved theatre for generations to come and help offer a much more inclusive and enjoyable experience for audiences and artists alike; cementing the Grand Pavilion’s position as a place where people of all ages can connect and engage with arts, culture, and heritage.

Following its closure, there will be a period of decommissioning when the building will be emptied of equipment, furniture and other fixtures and fittings, followed by a non-structural strip-out of ceilings, plasterboard, and other materials behind-the-scenes before the main contract starts on site later in 2024.

February 2024 marks a significant milestone in this iconic building’s long history.

We’re delighted that we are now able to get these ambitious development plans underway.

Although this will mean that the building will be out of operation for a while, we cannot wait to witness the transformation of this cherished arts venue into a modern, cultural space that residents and visitors to Porthcawl can enjoy for years to come.

Cllr Rhys Goode, Cabinet Member for Housing, Planning and Regeneration

Awen will continue to entertain its audiences during the redevelopment with a programme of ‘pop-up Pavilion’ events at the Awel-y-Mor Community Centre, Porthcawl and in other community venues. These monthly events will include jazz, comedy nights, tea dance, cinema, lunchtime theatre and family shows.
