A 21 year old man has been arrested after a stolen car taken from Cardiff was stopped by police in Newport less than 24 hours later.

Gwent Police Roads Policing officers spotted the stolen Renault while on patrol in Newport and began following the vehicle before bringing it to a safe stop.

The driver, a 21 year old man from the Newport area, was detained at the scene.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, driving without insurance, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a Class B drug cannabis, and driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the legal limit, relating to cocaine and cannabis.

Following the arrest, the man was handed over to South Wales Police officers who are continuing the investigation.

Police have not released further details at this stage.
