A new initiative which aims to increase physical activity levels for young people across Caerphilly County Borough has been launched.

Caerphilly County Borough Council and the leisure services are proud to launch the ‘Year 7 Active’ initiative in collaboration with all comprehensive schools. The new initiative will give Year 7 pupils free access to all ten sport and leisure facilities across the County Borough. This will include free access to swimming, fitness suites, classes and racquet sports.

Becoming active and taking care of our physical and mental wellbeing has never been so important. ‘Year 7 Active’ aims to encourage individuals to get involved in sport and fitness, try new activities and build confidence by removing cost as a barrier to participation.

Ross Whiting, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Learning and Leisure said, “A fantastic opportunity for all year 7 pupils to use and engage in the facilities across the County Borough. This new initiative will work to support the delivery of the sport and active recreation strategy by encouraging young people to be more active, more often. By supporting the next generation, we are also supporting their health, wellbeing and the benefits which come with being fit and active.”

Lottie, from Risca Comprehensive said, “I’m really excited because I like to do sport and now I can encourage my friends and mum to come with me too. We get to try new things like going to the gym or going to classes and I think that will be amazing”.

William, from Risca Comprehensive said, “I really missed doing sport and PE during the pandemic because we were just stuck at home and now we can do something with our friends, get fit together and have fun”.

All membership forms for Year 7 pupils will be distributed through school. Year 7 pupils who live inside the County Borough but attend a comprehensive school in another county can access a membership form from their local leisure centre.

For any queries, please contact your local leisure centre or email: [email protected].
