After facing life-changing challenges, Sarah Lewis from Newport has taken control of her future by launching her own skincare brand, SSKIN by Sarah, a business born out of resilience, passion, and support from Business Wales.

A former pharmaceutical representative, Sarah’s world shifted dramatically following a breast cancer diagnosis in the early 2010’s and subsequent redundancy in early 2024. Rather than let circumstances define her, Sarah used the moment to re-evaluate her career and focus on something she could shape herself.

Determined to regain control of her time and future, Sarah turned to Business Wales for guidance. She was introduced to Business Adviser, Graham Harvey, whose expert support helped her confidently transition from employee to entrepreneur.

With his support, Sarah developed a detailed financial and marketing plan, cashflow forecasts, and received tailored one-to-one guidance throughout the early stages of the business.

Business Wales’ commitment to Green Growth and Equality also influenced Sarah’s approach, leading her to embed sustainability into the core of her operations. She ensured that the equipment used in her advanced skincare treatments, which include microneedling, chemical peels, and dermaplaning, is ethically sourced and environmentally conscious.

“Running my own business is always something that has piqued my interest,” Sarah said. “Both my daughter and best friend run their own businesses, I had fallen out of love with my job and after being made redundant, I was really inspired to begin again and pursue setting up my own.

“I knew I had a unique opportunity to seize a gap in the market but having always been employed, I didn’t know where to start in setting up my own business, which is what led me to contact Business Wales.”

“Graham was wonderful from the very first call, he was so friendly and knowledgeable and put me completely at ease.  His financial expertise helped me prepare my cashflow forecast and realise I needed to take a finance course to strengthen my business acumen. I wouldn’t be in the position i am now without his advice.”

SSKIN by Sarah offers bespoke treatments that include a signature facial and personalised skincare advice at no extra cost. Since its launch, bookings have steadily increased, and Sarah is now close to making the business her full-time occupation.

Looking ahead, as she continues her mission to improve women’s skincare journeys, Sarah is exploring further training in non-regulated skin therapies such as cryotherapy and skin boosters like Profhilo, treatments designed to support skin hydration, elasticity, and overall health.

Business Wales Adviser Graham Harvey said: “Sarah came to Business Wales seeking start up support, particularly around business planning and cashflow. She engaged fully, attending our ‘Start Your Own Business’ webinar and later completing sessions on finance and marketing. Her positivity, drive, and passion for helping others have been inspiring. It’s been extremely rewarding to support her through this process.”
