Neath Port Talbot Council has welcomed plans linked to a £64 million investment in Port Talbot port, following confirmation that the site will support the development of floating offshore wind.

The announcement marks a significant step in establishing Port Talbot as one of the UK’s first ports to play a central role in the emerging floating offshore wind sector, particularly in the Celtic Sea.

Frances O’Brien, Chief Executive of Neath Port Talbot Council, said: “Port Talbot’s selection as one of the UK’s first ports to support floating offshore wind represents a major step forward in positioning the area at the centre of the fast growing clean energy sector.

“The development of floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea has the potential to transform the local economy. With Port Talbot’s strategic location, this project can help create high quality jobs, open up extensive supply chain opportunities for local businesses, and attract significant long term investment into Neath Port Talbot and the wider region.

“As a Council, we remain committed to working closely with our partners to support the development as it progresses, ensuring that our communities benefit from the economic, skills and regeneration opportunities it creates.

“This announcement reinforces the vital role Port Talbot can play in the UK’s transition to clean energy and strengthens our ambition for a more prosperous future for local people and businesses.”

The plans are expected to support the growth of floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea, a sector seen as key to the UK’s long-term renewable energy ambitions.

With its strategic location and existing infrastructure, Port Talbot is well placed to become a major hub for clean energy development, helping to drive investment, create jobs and support the transition to a low-carbon economy in South Wales.
