STEM volunteers in Wales are being encouraged to step forward to celebrate the work they do to promote civil engineering and STEM subjects to schools and young people across the country.

Entries are being sought for the ICE Wales Cymru STEM Ambassador of the Year 2022. The award honours an ICE member who has shown outstanding commitment to the industry by giving their time to inspire the next generation of civil engineers.

This year, due to the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, members can apply to become the ICE Wales Cymru STEM Ambassador of the Year if they have been involved in any STEM activity in the past 12 months, including a digital event.

Keith Jones, Director ICE Wales Cymru said:

“We are fortunate to have young people working alongside us encouraging others to consider a career in civil engineering. STEM ambassadors are vital in pointing the way for all to get involved in this great, rewarding career and this Award recognises there contibution”.

    Benefits of Award

In 2021, the ICE Wales Cymru accolade was awarded to Luke Cook, MEng (Hons) GMICE, Graduate Engineer at Atkins.

He said: It was a huge honour to be awarded ICE Wales Cymru STEM ambassador of the year for 2021 and to be recognised by ICE Wales Cymru for my work in STEM. It means a lot as it has assisted with my professional development.

“One of the key benefits it has brought is recognition of my work throughout the industry it also raises awareness of the importance of STEM in these challenging times.

Luke has encouraging words for this year’s potential entrants too:

“Winning ICE Wales Cymru STEM Ambassador of the Year is a great opportunity for you to reflect on your work and achieve recognition for hard work that STEM volunteers put in outside of their working hours. It is a great accolade to receieve”.

    How to enter

The deadline for entries is 5pm on Monday 25 April 2022.
