Streetlight replacements requiring a road closure at Abercynon Road

RCT Council will undertake the necessary replacement of eight streetlights at Abercynon Road in Glyn-coch – requiring day-time road closures (July 25-29) scheduled for the school summer holiday to minimise disruption.

The work needs to be completed as the streetlighting columns have passed their design life. The posts and brackets are showing signs of extensive corrosion, and may become a risk to pedestrians and road users if they aren’t upgraded. The Council will renew eight columns, as well as replacing their LED lanterns.

The scheme requires a road closure to ensure the safety of motorists and the workforce, due to the narrow highway at this section of Abercynon Road.

The work will take place from Monday, July 25, to Friday, July 29, utilising day-time working from 8am to 4pm. During these times, Abercynon Road will be closed in both directions between its junctions with The Grove and Cwm Farm. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and for emergency service vehicles.

An alternative route for motorists will be clearly signposted in both directions. From the northern side of the closure, the alternative route is via Abercynon Road, Park Street, Aberdare Road, Mountain Ash Road, Ynysmeurig Road, A4054, A470, Bridge Street, Berw Road and Ynysybwl Road.

In the opposite direction (from the southern side of the closure), motorists can proceed via Ynysybwl Road, Berw Road, Bridge Street, A470, Abercynon Northbound slip road, Ynysmeurig Road, Station Road, Herbert Street, Mountain Ash Road, Aberdare Road, Park Street and Abercynon Road.

Roger Waters, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Director, Frontline Services, said: “The eight lighting columns at Abercynon Road require replacement as part of the Council’s annual streetlighting renewal programme. In total, £200,000 has been earmarked to deliver a number of schemes in Rhondda Cynon Taf during 2022/23, within the latest Highways Capital Programme. All of our streetlights were upgraded to LED in recent years, in order to reduce energy consumption and contribute to our Climate Change goals and commitments.

“The upcoming work in Glyn-coch is scheduled for the school summer holiday to minimise the impact upon the community, recognising that the necessary road closure will cause travel disruption locally. The Council will work to complete the renewals as quickly as possible, and I’d like to thank the community in advance for their cooperation as we deliver these upgrades.”
