    The search is on to find the best Welshcakes in town

    To celebrate Fair Trade Fortnight 2023 and St David’s Day, the Great Welshcake Off will be held at Bedwellty House in Blaenau Gwent. The council is looking for the most delicious, the biggest and the most fun Welshcakes that have ever been baked and the only rule is that they must contain at least one Fairtrade ingredient.

    Entrants of all ages are invited to be creative and adventurous as there are lots of different classes to capture your imagination, originality and baking talent. Your Welshcakes can be any shape, any flavour and any size with the best in show being crowned Great Welshcake Off Champion 2023. There will also be awards for the Best Entry and Best Fairtrade Entry.

    There are classes for
    • 6 Traditional Welshcakes – Six of your best, traditional round Welshcakes.
    • 6 Welshcakes any flavour – Any sweet flavour other than traditional.
    • 6 Savoury Welshcakes – Any savoury flavour e.g. cheese, herbs, spice.
    • 6 Welshcakes of different shape – Any flavour, we are looking for a break from tradition, your entry can be 6 different shapes or all the same shape as long as they are not round.
    • Largest Welshcake – Must be round, measured across its diameter.
    • 3 Lovespoon shaped Welshcakes – The lovespoons can be one piece or several individual cakes joined together.
    • 6 Charity Welshcakes – Celebrate a charity close to your heart by baking Welshcakes to celebrate their logo or what they do. Any size, shape, flavour or colour.

    There are also children’s classes
    • Children’s class – Primary school pupils – 6 traditional Welshcakes – Six of your best, traditional round Welshcakes.
    • Children’s class – Primary school pupils – 6 fun Welshcakes – Any shape, flavour, colour or decoration.
    • Children’s class – Secondary school pupils – 6 traditional Welshcakes – Six of your best, traditional round Welshcakes.
    • Children’s class – Secondary school pupils – 6 fun Welshcakes – Any shape, flavour, colour or decoration.
    All Entries must be received in Bedwellty House by 1:00pm on 1st March 2023, when the judging begins. Full competition details can be found on the Bedwellty House and Park website or Blaenau Gwent Council website.

    Executive member for Regeneration, Cllr John Morgan said:
    ‘What better way to celebrate St David’s Day than with a Welshcake competition, I think it is far more palatable than eating raw leeks. The best thing about this is that we get to celebrate the virtues of Fairtrade products too so we are giving a lift to producers around the world. Entrants will be surprized at what is available locally, where it comes from and how buying Fairtrade can support communities in developing countries.’
