Two people have been arrested following a shoplifting incident that led to an emergency river rescue in Old St Mellons, Cardiff.

South Wales Police were called to Welcome Break Services in Pontprennau at around 7pm on Sunday, February 8, following reports that two people had stolen items from a shop.

Both suspects made off from the scene, with one later seen near the Rhymney River in Old St Mellons.

Emergency services were alerted and, at around 9pm, a 41-year-old man from Llanrumney was rescued from the river by firefighters. He was arrested on suspicion of theft and taken to hospital as a precaution, although police confirmed he did not suffer any serious injuries.

A 38-year-old woman, also from Llanrumney, was arrested on suspicion of theft in connection with the same incident.

Officers have since recovered the stolen goods, worth around £190, and returned them to the shop.

Both suspects remain in police custody while inquiries continue.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said the investigation is ongoing.
