Weight Loss and Wellbeing: How Losing Just 5% of Body Weight Can Improve Health

Weight loss can bring to mind a preoccupation with a particular number on the scales.

In fact, positive health outcomes can occur even before meeting a goal weight. For many, a weight loss of only 5% of total body weight can have a significant impact on health, comfort, and quality of life. According to the NHS, even losing 5 to 10 percent body weight (for someone who is overweight) can reduce health risks.

    Healthier Blood Pressure

Being overweight can cause you to have higher blood pressure. And there are also other blood pressure risks. If you’re carrying too much weight, your heart has to work harder and use more pressure to pump blood throughout your body. More blood cells are produced, and there is more wear and tear on your arteries.

Losing a bit of weight can help to reduce blood pressure, so it should be helpful to learn about weight management. This is not to say those extra pounds will magically make your blood pressure go back to normal. But being at a healthy weight, along with a few other healthy lifestyle changes and prescribed medicines if needed, is one way to help your health.

    Easier Movement

Life might feel lighter when less weight is being carried by the body. Walking to the local shops, climbing the stairs, and simply standing up from a chair may not feel as physically challenging.

Movement and weight work in a positive cycle. Easier movement can contribute to more physical activity, and regular movement contributes to better cardiovascular health, more energy, and better mental health. Subsequently, healthy weight loss could support easier movement.

    Better Sleep, More Energy?

Weight and sleep are linked in complex ways. A person who is overweight may be at higher risk of snoring or suffering from sleep apnoea. And, poor sleep can have a negative impact on a person’s energy, mood, and lifestyle factors.

If, in fact, weight could improve sleep (hopefully), daytime activities could feel more doable. Plus, with sleep on track, a person may be more likely to follow a healthy diet and choose to make the time to move.

    Look Beyond the Numbers

And the greatest advantage of all? People don’t have to hit a weight-loss home run to get there. 5% of body weight could be a reasonable number to aim for. And while people are working on that healthy number, they can be swapping out old eating habits for healthier ones, moving more, and reviving their sleep routines.

In some cases, people might benefit from additional support through weight loss treatments that are offered by a licensed healthcare provider. The right “plan” should depend on health, need, and the patient’s best interest. Whatever the plan of action, when it comes to weight loss and related long-term habits, these efforts could lead to positive health outcomes.
