Welsh businesses put people first in bold shift towards better work

From Brains Brewery to Fabulous Welshcakes, iconic Welsh businesses are backing better work through a bold HR and health and safety (H&S) shift.
Some of Wales’ most beloved and recognisable names are taking a stand for good employment, investing in their people and workplace cultures as the foundation for long-term resilience.
EffectiveHRM, a leading people-focused HR and H&S consultancy headquartered in Treforest, has this year partnered with a range of heritage and high-street names – including SA Brains, Fabulous Welshcakes, and several standout local hospitality businesses including Llanerch – to support a more sustainable, people-first approach to employment.
They are joined by some long standing clients Douglas Willis, a third-generation family business with deep roots in the Welsh food industry and Gwynt y Ddraig Cider. The consultancy has also started supporting Chapter Arts Centre.
“These brands aren’t just business success stories, they are part of the cultural fabric of Wales,” said Emma del Torto, Managing Director of EffectiveHRM.
“What unites them is a shared commitment to looking after their people, even when times are tough. We are seeing a quiet revolution in Welsh workplaces where doing right by your employees isn’t seen as optional, it’s seen as essential to resilience, growth, and longevity.”
With economic pressures mounting on the hospitality, food, arts and manufacturing sectors, these businesses are showing that HR and H&S is no longer a back-office function, but a central pillar of purpose-driven leadership.
“Wales has always punched above its weight when it comes to culture and community,” Emma added.
“Now we’re seeing that same pride translate into workplace values. Our clients want to build fair, inclusive, engaging environments, not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it makes business sense. Happy, safe, teams perform better, stay longer, and help companies grow stronger.”
These efforts align with a wider movement in Wales toward fair work and responsible business, championed by organisations across sectors and supported by public policy.
For EffectiveHRM, this growing demand signals a shift in what Welsh businesses want from HR and H&S: not just compliance and contracts, but culture, care, and clarity.
“The employers we work with are showing real leadership,” Emma said. “They are proving that being a good employer isn’t just a badge – it is a business model.”
Nick Payne, CEO, SA Brain & Co, said: “Working with EffectiveHRM has been a game-changer for Brains.
“Their team has seamlessly taken over our HR and Health & Safety, streamlining processes that were previously time-consuming and complex. They have been proactive, responsive, and consistently ahead of the curve.
“Our people are at the heart of everything we do, and EffectiveHRM has helped us support them better while protecting the legacy of one of Wales’ most iconic brands. Their support has allowed us to focus more on our business and our community.”
