What’s On in the Dramatic Heart of Wales this May Half Term

With the May half term just around the corner, families across South Wales are searching for a range of activities to keep their children entertained for the week.

The area of Neath Port Talbot, also known as the Dramatic Heart of Wales, is brimming with adventures just waiting to be uncovered. From winding cycle trails to treetop adventures, surfing lessons to unearthing ancient history, there’s a reason why families love this hidden gem.

In It Together Festival

Start the May half term strong at the In It Together Festival! This popular festival is now in its fourth year, and draws people in from all over the UK and beyond.

Located at Old Park Farm in Margam, the festival is extremely family friendly, offering family festival tickets and family weekend camping. A dedicated area within the festival grounds, called ‘Tic Tac Toe’, provides over 100 activities for both adults and children, including the World’s Biggest Bouncy Castle and an outdoor cinema.

Sing and dance under the sun, and make lasting memories at the In It Together Festival this half term. 

Urdd Eisteddfod, Margam Park

Established in 1922, The Urdd was founded to give children and young people in Wales an opportunity to learn and socialise in Welsh. Now, there are up to 100,000 visitors to the Urdd every year, with this year’s festival taking place at Margam Country Park.

The Urdd Eisteddfod will be at the beautiful Margam Country Park from Monday 26th May until Saturday 31st May, and it’s a fantastic day out for families to soak up Welsh culture and celebrate young talent.

Lake & Land Adventures

Also at Margam Country Park is Margam Park Adventure, an independently run outdoor activity provider who run sessions such as canoeing, foraging, bushcraft, archery, go kart hire and more.

Their team of experienced instructors, coaches and guides can offer families a unique and unforgettable experience this half term. For a day filled with adventure, adrenaline, and a little bit of learning, Margam Park Adventure promises a fantastic day out.

Discover the story of Richard Burton

2025 marks the Richard Burton Centenary, celebrating the life and legacy of the Hollywood Golden Age actor who took Wales to the world.

Walk in his footsteps on the Richard Burton Trails of Ponthrydyfen and Taibach, or visit the ‘Becoming Richard Burton’ exhibition in Afan Shopping Centre which previews from 26th 31st – May. Learn about how young Richie Jenkins discovered his love of acting, and how his world-renowned talent was shaped by the landscapes and communities here in the Dramatic Heart of Wales.

Take To The Waves

For families who need a bit of sea, sand and surf during their half term break, no trip to the Dramatic Heart of Wales would be complete without a visit to Aberavon seafront.

The three-mile-long stretch of sandy beach is perfect for holidaymakers, complete with delicious fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, and a brand-new aqua splash park and playground.

For a bit more of an active beach day, Surf School Wales offers surfing lessons for the whole family, promising two hours of fun which is guaranteed to tucker the kids out!

Floating Fun

Retreat inland and explore Neath Port Talbot’s ancient waterways with the South Wales Adventure Company.

Based on the Neath Canal in Resolven, they provide a wide range of activities including canoe, kayak & paddleboard hire. The canal is fantastic for beginners and families as the water offers a calm and relaxing foundation for floating fun.

They also provide night kayaking, a sensory delight that sees the kayaks decked out in colourful lights as adventurers explore the canal in the dark. This is a fantastic activity that has a real wow factor, and has proven to be incredibly popular with families since it was launched.
