Building works have begun on the former school in Miskin, to bring 11 much needed affordable homes to the area.
Trivallis, a housing association based in Rhondda Cynon Taf, has partnered with Cartrefi Limited to deliver 11 new homes in the heart of Miskin, transforming the former school building and giving it a new lease of life.
The development is being delivered using the Social Housing Grant in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and Welsh Government.
Sarah Davies, Development Manager at Trivallis, said: “We are extremely pleased to see that works have commenced to convert the former Miskin School building. This redevelopment will enable us to deliver much needed affordable housing in an area of such high demand, in the village of Miskin.
“We are proud to be delivering these homes for local residents who may have not previously been able to live in the area.”
Trivallis purchased the building back in November 2019 and has been busy working on plans to provide high quality affordable homes in the area.
Neil Phillips, Construction Manager at Trivallis, explained: “Trivallis recognises the importance of this building to the community, and we hope that by utilising the existing building, we can retain the historical importance to the village, preserving and appreciating its distinctive character.
“It is a significant development that will give more people an opportunity to live affordably in an area that is currently lacking social housing.”
The school will be redeveloped into 10 one-bed flats and one two-bed house, bringing 11 new properties to the area where there is a shortage of one-bed properties. To reduce the need of any on-street parking, the development will also have 11 parking spaces located at the rear of the building.
Steven John, Director of Cartrefi Limited, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with Trivallis on this project. The design preserves the character of the building and will transform the old, unused school into 11 well needed homes for the area.
“Many residents in the area are happy to see the work starting, bringing a new chapter to the school building.”
Councillor Martin Douglas Ashford of Pontyclun Central expressed: “I’m really pleased that the planned redevelopment of the old school is finally starting. I’m delighted that the density of the accommodation has been greatly reduced in line with the wishes of local residents and Pontyclun Community Council.”
The redevelopment of Miskin School, follows the recent redevelopment of the former Welsh Primary School in Llantrisant, that saw Trivallis transform the derelict school building into 18 new homes in old Llantrisant.
Planning permission for the development was fully granted in March 2022 and work is expected to be completed sometime during Autumn 2024.
