Trail and boardwalk plans for Bryngarw Country Park

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet will discuss additional Welsh Government funding that has been secured for Bryngarw Country Park at a meeting next week.

In September 2019, the local authority, in partnership with Awen Cutural Trust, was awarded a £500,000 Valleys Regional Park Discovery Sites Capital Grant by Welsh Government for projects at the country park, including the development of a new education centre, re-development of the visitor centre, facilities to promote active travel, tree planting and the creation of a wildlife pond.

A further £147,000 has now been secured from Welsh Government with Awen Cultural Trust, the registered charity which operates the park on behalf of the council, planning to create a sculpture heritage trail, extend the renewal of boardwalks through the park, install solar panels on buildings, improve toilet facilities, and make improvements to the car park.

The Valleys Regional Park promotes the natural and cultural heritage of the South Wales Valleys with the aim of developing a regional commitment to co-ordinated promotion and management of the landscape. It covers an area from Carmarthenshire in the west to Pontypool in the east and Bridgend in the south to Merthyr Tydfil in the north.

Welsh Government has agreed the proposed actions and the Cabinet is recommended to accept the additional funding and amend its agreement with Awen Cultural Trust accordingly.
