St. David’s Dewi Sant Cardiff has opened a new Calm and Safe Space, a specially created facility for autistic visitors and guests with learning difficulties or sensory processing differences.

The Calm and Safe Space features Human-Centric Lighting (HCL), designed to work with the circadian rhythm of our bodies using the natural colour of daylight. The lighting’s ‘calm mode’ is proven to increase melatonin levels in the body, aiding in relaxation. Visitors to the space are also welcome to use the sensory toys provided there.

St David’s has worked alongside Autistic Minds to develop the space, and autistic designers at the charity worked on the centre’s updated bilingual Autism Guide which can be found at the Guest Services Desk or on the St David’s website.

To celebrate the Calm and Safe Space, St David’s and Autistic Minds are searching for autistic artists in Wales to share their artwork to decorate the room. Submissions can be made via the charity through [email protected]. Artwork will be displayed in the centre’s malls before being moved to the Calm and Safe Space.

James Waugh, Centre Director at St David’s Dewi Sant, said: “We’re delighted to unveil our new Calm and Safe Space. We hope this provides a soothing area for our guests with sensory processing difficulties, and helps towards making St David’s more accessible for all.

“We’d like to thank Autistic Minds for their knowledge and support in developing the space.”

St David’s Dewi Sant also offers Hidden Disability Lanyards for visitors, which can also be found at the Guest Services Desk.
