Cardiff’s City Hall will be illuminated bright yellow this weekend to mark Geraint Thomas becoming the first Welshman to win the Tour de France.

The 32-year-old cyclist from the Birchgrove area of Cardiff retained the winners’ yellow jersey he wore for most of the stages this year, after beating defending champion and team-mate Chris Froome.

Visitors to this weekend’s Capital FM Cardiff Bay Beach Festival will have the opportunity of watching the final stages of the race over the weekend on a big screen at the attraction.

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas said:

“We are so proud of Geraint’s fantastic achievement we’ve decided to illuminate City Hall in yellow on Saturday and Sunday to mark this landmark victory for Welsh sport.

“Geraint is a great ambassador for his home-city and an inspiration to young people thinking of taking up a particular sport professionally, or for leisure. As many people will know Geraint began to cycle competitively with the Maindy Flyers Cycling Club on the track at Maindy Leisure Centre here in Cardiff, and he is proof positive that with hard work, dedication, desire and good coaching it’s possible to reach the pinnacle of your sport.

“On behalf of everyone here in Cardiff I would like to send congratulations to Geraint, his family and all at Team Sky.”

Geraint Thomas is a former pupil of Whitchurch High School and part of an illustrious list of sporting alumni which includes Gareth Bale and Sam Warburton.
