Cardiff Council has revealed plans to increase cab fares by between 18% and 41% on journeys within the city, but is to consider an alternative proposal from a leading taxi company before it makes its final decision. Cardiff Council has endorsed the Welsh Government’s plan to eradicate the HIV virus in Wales and achieve zero tolerance of HIV-related stigma by 2030. A flood defence system, designed to protect properties in south-east Cardiff from rising sea levels for the next 100 years is set to be approved by Cardiff Council. Construction of the scheme, 85% of which will be paid for by the Welsh Government, with Cardiff Council contributing the remaining 15%, is set to begin early next year, with work due to be completed by the latter end of 2025. Close to 90 projects have now been approved as part of a major on-going investment helping Swansea residents, communities and businesses recover from the impact of the pandemic. Schemes to have benefited from Swansea Council’s Economic Recovery Fund include an Energy Awareness Hub which gives free advice to householders looking to save money on their energy bills. Since its launch earlier this year, the hub has directly engaged with about 300 local people, helping deliver estimated potential savings worth a combined £48,000 over 12 months. Great news for Aberdare residents as a new re-use shop is officially opened at 31/32 Cannon Street. The third, ‘The Shed’ which is based on the high street in Aberdare town centre, has been officially opened by RCT Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, Cllr Ann Crimmings. Caerphilly County Borough Council’s first marine clean up proves successful. This autumn, Caerphilly County Borough Council and Keep Wales Tidy are calling upon volunteers to dust off those trusty litter pickers, pledge their support and take part in Marine Clean Cymru, targeting rivers, waterways, and beaches across Wales. Young people and education staff in Wales can now access free Welsh lessons as part of a Welsh Government initiative to increase the number of Welsh speakers. The commitment is part of the Co-Operation Agreement with Plaid Cymru. 18-25 year olds can enrol on Welsh courses with the National Centre for Learning Welsh, and will not be asked to pay when registering. A significant investment of nearly £100m is being made by the Welsh Government to improve childcare availability, boost Welsh language provision and fund free part-time places. The funding includes £26m for the next phase of the expansion of part-time Flying Start childcare; £70m for improvements and essential maintenance available to all childcare settings and £3.8m to support more childcare providers to improve their Welsh language provision.
