FROM spring, independent schools across England and Wales will be allowed to opt out of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) for future teaching staff while existing teaching staff can remain members of the TPS. The decision, by the Department for Education (DfE), follows growing frustration in the independent school sector at the continual increase in employer pension contributions into the TPS – which in September 2019 rose by over 40% from 16.48% to 23.68%.  While the government covered the increase for state schools and universities, no support was provided to the independent school sector. Businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors are to receive a one-off grant worth up to £9,000, the Chancellor has announced. This follows the Prime Minister’s announcement last night that these business will be closed until at least February half-term in order to help control the virus, and, together with the wide range of existing support, provides them with certainty through the Spring period. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the completion of Cadw’s national survey of listed buildings, they have revealed 7 of Wales’s ‘quirkiest’ listed buildings – and you may be a little surprised at what has made the list! A WELSH charity has joined forces with environmental campaigners to call for a ban on plastic cigarette filters in Wales. ASH Wales, the Marine Conservation Society and Keep Wales Tidy want the sale of plastic-filled cigarette butts to be banned alongside items such as plastic straws and plastic cotton bud stems. Welsh Government launched its Reducing Single Use Plastic consultation in July, with proposals to create a law banning the sale of single use plastic items.
