Hundreds of emergency workers were attacked in South Wales in the 12 months since new legislation introduced stricter sentences for those who assault blue-light workers. The law came into effect on November 13, 2018 – and in the year since, 868 assaults have been reported against emergency workers in South Wales. Charges have been brought in about 62% of cases. A CARDIFF scientist has received £373k from Cancer Research UK to find new ways to diagnose pancreatic cancer at an earlier stage. Each year in Wales around 520 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and around 70% of these cases are diagnosed at the latest stage (stage 4). Dr Catherine Hogan at Cardiff University’s European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute has been awarded the funding by Cancer Research UK to understand how pancreatic cancer cells develop, with the aim of developing diagnostic tools for the future. E-cigarettes are by far the most common quit smoking tool in Wales, according to new figures published by Welsh Government. In the past year more than twice as many Welsh smokers chose e-cigarettes as their quit smoking aid compared to patches or gum. According to the latest figures from the National Survey for Wales, of the 467,000 smokers – 45% tried to give up last year, with 49% choosing e-cigarettes whilst 22% tried nicotine patches, inhaler or gum.
