A large wildfire continued burning overnight in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park after breaking out on Thursday afternoon. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said crews remained at the scene on Thursday evening as they tackled the blaze, which affected an area of around 20 square kilometres. The fire impacted forestry, peat and fine grassland, creating difficult conditions for firefighters working in the area. Multiple fire appliances, all terrain vehicles and a fire service drone were deployed to the incident, alongside a Wildfire Officer who supported crews in monitoring fire behaviour and directing operations safely. Wales’ leading tobacco control charity is today calling on all parties contesting the Senedd election to set out how they will deliver a Smokefree Wales, as the Tobacco and Vapes Act receives Royal Assent and becomes law. As this landmark legislation is passed, ASH Wales warns around 10 people die everyday from smoking in Wales. This legislation is the most significant tobacco control measure in a generation. It will make it illegal to sell tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, and introduces new powers to regulate vaping products, including restricting marketing designed to appeal to children. International artists from Ireland and Brittany will perform at Tafwyl this year as part of a new initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration between minority language cultures across Europe. Festival organisers have announced they will be partnering with the music festivals Gouel Broadel ar Brezhoneg in Brittany and Lá Mór na Gaeilge in Ireland, aiming to create more opportunities for artists to perform and collaborate on international stages. Wonderwool Wales, the premier wool and natural fibre festival in Wales, celebrated its 20th anniversary in style at the weekend with a record attendance, record number of exhibitors and more overseas visitors than ever. Such was the response to the opening day of the show, held at the Royal Welsh Showground, Llanelwedd, on Saturday that many exhibitors had to transport more stock for their stalls. Cardiff and Vale College’s Women’s Rugby Academy has brought home its first piece of silverware after being crowned Urdd WRU 7-a-side Plate champions. The College’s Netball Academy also had a winning season, securing the league title with a hard-fought 35-31 victory over Coleg y Cymoedd in the season’s decisive fixture. Ogmore Vale Bowls Club has received continued support to further enhance its community facilities, with an additional £9,000 which has been put to good use in developing a new patio area and siting two new equipment sheds.
